Three-year-old gelding Apocalypto rewarded his patient owners at Canberra on Friday by breaking his maiden in dominant fashion.

The son of Domesday had placed on six occasions from his eight previous starts, including a third at Canterbury, but had failed to convert his consistency to a win until Friday’s race in the nation’s capital.

Lining up in a 1400 metre maiden off a month’s break between runs, Apocalypto was able to record a comfortable 2-3/4 length victory with Danny Beasley in the saddle.

Trainer John Thompson will decide on Apocalypto’s next assignment in the coming days with the spelling paddock looming as a possibility.

Thompson has kindly opened his Randwick stables for an open day this Sunday where yearlings by sires such as So You Think, Equiano and Savabeel will be paraded.
