An improved track rating made all the difference for SCALLOPINI at Ipswich on Wednesday as the Steve O’Dea-trained gelding notched Proven Thoroughbreds’ 19th winner for the calendar year.

After failing on a heavy track in the Listed Daybreak Lover Stakes (1200m) at the Sunshine Coast last month, SCALLOPINI tackled the midweek assignment three and a half weeks between runs and duly saluted as the $2.25 favourite in soft (5) going.

The three-year-old son of champion sire SNITZEL jumped from the outside barrier of 10 but was able to slot in one off the fence in fourth position for jockey Paul Hammersley before gaining the upper hand over the concluding stages of the 1350m contest.
