The Queensland winter carnival moves to Ipswich this Saturday for their annual Cup meeting where Proven Thoroughbreds has three horses nominated.
The Matt Hoysted-trained trio of SHOT OF WHISKEY (pictured), NAVAL TRADER and SEISMIC BOOM are set to face the starter on Saturday, the former of which is a last start Doomben winner.
But before the team heads to Ipswich, Hoysted will take the covers off 2yo trial winner APEX PREDATOR at Doomben’s midweek fixture. Bookmakers have installed the daughter of first season sire TIGER OF MALAY as the early favourite in the 1200m QTIS Maiden.
Also running on Wednesday will be NZ import ELLE HUDSON and 3yo gelding HARD LINER for Joe Pride at Canterbury. ELLE HUDSON looks poised to win third-up over 1900m while HARD LINER is only stepping out for his second career outing and will benefit from the experience.
Our form analyst Nic Ashman’s latest SECTIONALS REVIEW article takes a look at PRIVATE EYE’s brave run in the Stradbroke as well as our first 2yo winner of the season – RULE THE NIGHT.

SIRE ON FIRE – TORONADO
Most sires go their whole career without a juvenile Group 1 winner – indeed it took I AM INVINCIBLE more than 10 years – so it was curious to see a son of HIGH CHAPARRAL sire last Saturday’s G1 JJ Atkins winner TRON BOLT. If there were any doubts about TORONADO being a proper stallion, they have surely been put to bed now. He has stakes winners from 1000m all the way up to 2800m and remains great value at $88,000.
BLACK BOOKER – OPINE
Nic Ashman’s Sectionals Review article best summarises OPINE’s debut at Gosford last week: “Nothing went right – he was dragged back and then over-raced, constantly getting his head up. Finally he was let go at the 400m and from there to the 200m he clocked the fastest sectional in the race. But the poor manners told late and his run petered out. He might be better off being allowed to use his energy or perhaps his manners will improve – likely one of those two, and either way he improves.”
RUNNERS THIS WEEK
Canterbury Wednesday June 17
Maiden Plate 1250m
HARD LINER
Joe Pride/Sam Clipperton
Comment: Very green on debut at Warwick Farm when finishing last though not beaten far. If he can execute the second half of the race then look for improvement.
BM72 Handicap 1900m

ELLE HUDSON
Joe Pride/Sam Clipperton
Comment: Looks ready third-up to 1900m following two sound runs over unsuitable distances. Has wet track form, just needs luck from an awkward draw.
Doomben Wednesday June 17
QTIS 2YO Fillies Maiden Plate 1200m

APEX PREDATOR
Matt Hoysted/Jag Guthmann-Chester
Comment: 2yo filly on debut. Has revealed a good level of ability at the trials, now needs to bring that to the pressure of raceday. Has early speed so should be prominent early.
Ipswich Saturday Jun 20
BM78 Handicap 1200m

SHOT OF WHISKEY
Matt Hoysted/Fiona Sandkuhl (a3)
Comment: Tough on-pacer coming off victory in the same grade of race at Doomben last month. Will be in receipt of a 3kg claim again and has drawn favourably. Will be hard to catch around this circuit.
Class 6 Handicap 1350m

NAVAL TRADER
Matt Hoysted/TBA
Comment: Second-up after doing his best work late over 1200m at Eagle Farm in BM85 company. Has a good second-up record (6:1-2-1) but will likely to go back again from a wide barrier.
Class 3 Handicap 1350m

SEISMIC BOOM
Matt Hoysted/TBA
Comment: Last start only beaten a neck over 1200m here and racing as though she will appreciate the softer tempo of 1350m. Drawn to get an economical run and plunges in weight.
