PRIVATE EYE’s quest for an elusive sprint major continues in the 2026 Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm.
Having placed twice in both The Everest and the Stradbroke, no one would begrudge PRIVATE EYE of victory on Saturday. But as a rising 9yo the clock is ticking for the $13million earner to achieve his ‘crowning moment’.
One factor likely to be in his favour is barrier four which will allow jockey Nash Rawiller to take up a prominent position in the field of 18 without expending too much energy. Historically, PRIVATE EYE has had woeful luck with barriers.
Trainer Joe Pride will also be armed with stablemates HEADLEY GRANGE – the current favourite, and ESTADIO MESTALLO in the $3million showpiece.
On the same day at the Gold Coast, the Matt Hoysted-trained RULE THE NIGHT will be out to become Proven’s first 2yo winner of the season. The son of WILD RULER put in a slashing debut at the Doomben midweeks last month and is set to start one of the favourites in the 1400m Maiden.
But before the racing action on Saturday, Proven will be represented by 3yo colt HINZEL at Wednesday’s Randwick-Kensington meeting and first starter OPINE at Gosford Thursday. The former won on debut at Kembla during the summer and looks well above average for the Kerry Parker stable.

SIRE ON FIRE – PINATUBO
Having waited until May to get his first Australian winner, another three winners have followed in relatively quick succession, the latest being last Saturday’s Listed Show A Heart victor VOYNICHESE. That now places PINATUBO 2nd by prizemoney on the first season sires premiership.
BLACK BOOKER – NAVAL TRADER
First-up off an extended break, he ran home his last 1000m in the 4th quickest time of the day at Eagle Farm last Saturday. Adding merit to the run was that he lost a plate. Up to 1400m second-up would be ideal for this consistent 6yo gelding.
RUNNERS THIS WEEK
Randwick-Kensington Wednesday Jun 10
BM64 Handicap 1000m
HINZEL
Kerry Parker/Nash Rawiller
Comment: Promising colt resuming. Won impressively on debut at only start last preparation. Awkward draw here but only has eight rivals to beat and gets an experienced jockey on.
Gosford Thursday Jun 11
Maiden Plate 1200m

OPINE
Joe Pride/Andrew Adkins
Comment: On debut. Slow maturing son of SO YOU THINK coming off a wind operation but recent trials have been very encouraging. If he gets around Gosford, is a winning chance.
Eagle Farm Saturday Jun 13
G1 Stradbroke Handicap 1400m

PRIVATE EYE
Joe Pride/Nash Rawiller
Comment: Class galloper relatively well in at the weights. Was only beaten 1.2 lengths in the main lead-up – the Kingsford Smith Cup – when six weeks between runs. Strips fitter and can make the most of a low draw. 2nd in 2022, 3rd in 2025.
Gold Coast Saturday Jun 13
QTIS 2YO Maiden Handicap 1400m

RULE THE NIGHT
Matt Hoysted/Jag Guthmann-Chester
Comment: Made his way into our blackbook after a slashing run on debut at Doomben over 1200m. Never travelled in the wet conditions but surged late to just miss. Extra distance suits and comes back to provincial company. Top chance.
