A favourable barrier draw has PRIVATE EYE poised to run well in the Group 1 Kingsford Smith Cup (1300m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

Barrier draws have historically not been kind to PRIVATE EYE but this Saturday he is set to jump from the inside gate in a field of 16.

Regular rider Nash Rawiller has been engaged to do the steering, at a track where the Joe Pride-trained galloper has an exemplary record of a Group 2 win and a pair of Group 1 placings.

Proven’s other runners this week include 2yo first starter RULE THE NIGHT and consistent older gelding SHOT OF WHISKEY at Doomben on Wednesday. Then at Kembla on Tuesday BROADWAY STREET will be out to redeem himself after failing in wet conditions last start.

Nic Ashman’s latest SECTIONALS REVIEW article breaks down the maiden win of OBSIDIAN DREAM at Hawkesbury last week plus an early look at the Kingsford Smith Cup.

SIRE ON FIRE – SNITZEL

He may be in the twilight of his stallion career, but this could well end up being SNITZEL’s best season on record. At the Gold Coast on Friday night THE NEXT EPISODE was a brilliant winner of the Magic Millions National 2YO Classic before AGENT ZERO and DECLICHY BOULEVARD both got the cash at Randwick 24 hours later.

BLACK BOOKER – ELLE HUDSON

As far as first-up runs from a stayer go, this was a belter of a return at Warwick Farm last Wednesday. He clocked the second fastest last 1000m of the day to finish within 2.8 lengths of the winner over 1300m. As we head into the depths of winter, this NZ-bred gelding is going to be in his element over longer trips.

RUNNERS THIS WEEK

Doomben Wednesday May 27

QTIS 2YO Maiden Plate 1200m

RULE THE NIGHT

Matt Hoysted/Jag Guthmann-Chester

Comment: On debut. Gives the impression he will be better over further but this looks a suitable kick off point, albeit from the outside barrier so will likely have to settle back in the field.

BM78 Handicap 1200m

SHOT OF WHISKEY

Matt Hoysted/Fiona Sandkuhl (a3)

Comment: Honest gelding that gets conditions to suit here and should be hard to run down with a light weight on his back around this circuit.

Eagle Farm Saturday May 30

G1 Kingsford Smith Cup 1300m

PRIVATE EYE

Joe Pride/Nash Rawiller

Comment: Class galloper who loves Eagle Farm and will be on pace in a race that looks devoid of speed. Goes well fresh and 1300m is ideal. Just need the wet weather to stay away.

Ipswich Saturday May 30

QTIS 3YO BM68 Handicap 1200m

SEISMIC BOOM

Matt Hoysted/TBA

Comment: Hopelessly held up at the Sunshine Coast last Sunday where it looked like she had plenty to give as favourite. On the quick back up after that soft run.

Kembla Grange Tuesday June 2

BM64 Handicap 1300m/Midway Class 1 Handicap 1500m

BROADWAY STREET

Kerry Parker/TBA

Comment: Broke his maiden in style over 1200m here last month before flopping on a wet deck over the same track and distance last start. Capable of bouncing back if the weather clears.
