Unbeaten filly CHAMPAGNE LANE will test her credentials in metropolitan company at Eagle Farm this Saturday.
The Matt Hoysted-trained 3yo won her first two starts at the Sunshine Coast in comfortable fashion and so has earned a crack at Saturday metropolitan grade. The outside barrier has done her no favours but if she’s going to measure up to bigger races, then she will need to be figuring in the finish here.
Hoysted will also saddle up experienced campaigners NAVAL TRADER and TOWN CRIER in the meeting’s closer – a 1200m BM85 Handicap.
Our sole other runner this weekend is OTONO for Kerry Parker at Hawkesbury on Saturday.
It was a fruitful Melbourne Cup Day for the black and lime green colours with two wins and two seconds from only four runners, More on that story HERE.
As for the Melbourne Cup itself, seeing the modestly-bred Victorian HALF YOURS take out the race in such dominant fashion was a welcome result in the face of an ever-growing number of imports and international visitors. A warm congratulations to rider Jamie Kah and the training duo of Tony and Calvin McEvoy.

SIRE ON FIRE – GHAIYYATH
From a first crop of only 74 live foals, this Godolphin stallion is shaping up like a proper sire of stayers. He produced last Saturday’s VRC Derby (2500m) winner OBSERVER and then on Cup Day sired the TAB Trophy (1800m) winner DIFFERENT GRAVY. He also had the fourth and sixth placegetters in the TAB Trophy so his representation in these 3yo staying features is outstanding when you consider the relatively low number of foals he had in his first crop.
BLACK BOOKER – ELIVINA
First-up over 1400m, this stoutly-bred mare ran on resolutely to finish second at Kembla Grange on Cup day. She’s obviously going to be much better over further and given how far she progressed in her first preparation, would be reasonable to expect her to progress through the grades this campaign.
Upcoming Proven Thoroughbreds runners
Eagle Farm Saturday November 8
BM85 Handicap 1200m
NAVAL TRADER
Matt Hoysted/Ben Thompson
Comment: Resuming. Generally runs well fresh and has a leading rider engaged from an ideal barrier. Only knock is he is yet to win below 1350m in his 20 career starts.

TOWN CRIER
Matt Hoysted/Daniel Moor
Comment: Racing in great heart and deservedly got the money in Class 5 company over this track and distance last start. This tougher and drawn wide so will need to improve again.
3YO Handicap 1200m

CHAMPAGNE LANE
Matt Hoysted/Daniel Moor
Comment: Unbeaten filly rising to city company for the first time. Drawn awkwardly so much will depend on the speed of the race and if she can get an economical run.
Hawkesbury Saturday November 8
BM68 Handicap 2000m

OTONO
Kerry Parker/Brock Ryan
Comment: Appeared to have her chance when third over 1600m at Kembla last time out however was coming off a fast run 1800m Midway at Randwick where she resented being between horses. Rises to 2000m now which is unchartered territory but is well placed in this grade of race.
