A racehorse’s colouring may seem trivial, but it can provide valuable insight into their ancestry.
Take ALL TOO HARD for example. A bay stallion, approximately 20% of his stock are chestnut.
Statistics reveal that chestnut coloured ALL TOO HARD foals are 21% more likely to win and 14% more likely to win or place at stakes level.
Why is this?
The answer may lie with a mare called SCANDINAVIA.
As distinct from black, brown or bay, chestnut colouring is a recessive gene, meaning there must be 2 copies of the gene to produce a chestnut horse. SCANDINAVIA is the first chestnut ancestor to appear in ALL TOO HARD’s pedigree and so is the logical source of the recessive gene on the paternal side. Not only was SCANDINAVIA Group 1 performed on the racetrack but has become one of the most influential broodmares of the modern era, throwing 5 stakes performers plus the dam of ALL TOO HARD and indeed BLACK CAVIAR! A desirable bloodline to say the least.
Proven Thoroughbreds currently has two racehorses by ALL TOO HARD and both happen to be chestnut:
ACCREDITED (19:7-3-3)
INDEFENSIBLE (6:2-0-0)
And our latest acquisition, whether by design or coincidence, is also a chestnut – the ALL TOO HARD x EXOTIC ENTERPRISE 2yo colt (pictured). Like ACCREDITED and INDEFENSIBLE, he will be trained by Joe Pride and was a superior yearling on type to both of those aforementioned horses.
For $6125 a share, the odds are stacked in your favour.
