The final week of 2024 will see a host of Proven Thoroughbreds gallopers face the starter, spearheaded by the unbeaten BREAK FREE.

BREAK FREE (pictured) will aim to extend her perfect record to three when she contests the Group 3 Vo Rogue Plate (1300m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday. It’s a steep rise in grade from her first two wins at the Sunshine Coast and Grafton however trainer Matt Hoysted believes the filly is up for the challenge. Win, lose or draw, the daughter of CAPITALIST is bound for the spelling paddock after Saturday, with one eye on a Brisbane winter carnival campaign.

Last start winners BOARD MEMBER and SECOND SUN also feature in our upcoming runners, along with resuming trio TAKE A BOW, HEYOKA and TAKE YOU THERE.

The very first day of 2025 will herald the beginning of another busy sales season with inspections set to get underway at the Magic Millions Gold Coast complex.

SIRE ON FIRE – THE AUTUMN SUN

A metro treble on Wednesday was followed up with a double on Saturday including IN SUMMER who took her record to three wins and two seconds from only six starts with victory at Randwick.

BLACK BOOKER – OCEAN ZAR

Honest mare whose preparation has been heavily compromised by Queensland’s spate of wet tracks. Was more than a month between runs when working home strongly into third at the Gold Coast on Friday night. That should bring her on nicely for a suitable race early in the new year.

BET WITH NIC

Times analyst Nic Ashman’s popular weekly tip has moved to a separate article that will be published every Thursday on the Proven website. His best bet around the country on Saturday will be revealed plus a link to subscribe to his full package of tips across the metropolitan meetings. His record speaks for itself with 18 collects from 28 selections!

Upcoming Proven Thoroughbreds runners

Warwick Thursday December 26

QTIS 3YO Maiden Handicap 1200m

SKYPORT LANE

Matt Hoysted/Fiona Sandkuhl (a1.5)

Comment: Unplaced in four runs to date but hasn’t raced with a great deal of luck. Looks ready for 1200m now but has another wide barrier to contend with.

Maiden Handicap 1200m

CHATTERBOX

Matt Hoysted/Fiona Sandkuhl (a1.5)

Comment: Resumed over 1200m and was found wanting late. May appreciate being ridden more conservatively this time but needs to lift.

BM62 Handicap 1100m

HEYOKA

Matt Hoysted/Jasper Franklin (a0)

Comment: First-up. Didn’t appear to come up last preparation after beginning her career in auspicious fashion. Placed in a trial this time in and will be interesting to see if she can rediscover her form in what looks a suitable drop in grade.

Murwillumbah Friday December 27

BM66 Handicap 2020m

SECOND SUN

Matt Hoysted/Andrew Mallyon

Comment: Strong win over 1800m at the Sunshine Coast last start. Gives the impression he’ll relish getting out further in distance and this is a conservative target. Top chance.

Ipswich Friday December 27

QTIS 3YO BM65 Handicap 800m

TAKE A BOW

Matt Hoysted/Fiona Sandkuhl (a3)

Comment: Resuming. Won first-up over a similar trip on debut in the winter. Won a recent trial and drawn to effect. Hard to beat.

Kembla Grange Saturday December 28

Class 1 Handicap 1300m

TAKE YOU THERE

Kerry Parker/Lee Magorrian

Comment: Surprise debut winner here over 1200m last preparation before tactics worked against her over 1400m second-up. Resumes over 1300m this time in and drawn awkwardly. Prefer to see for now.

Eagle Farm Saturday December 28

G3 Vo Rogue Plate 1300m

BREAK FREE

Matt Hoysted/TBA

Comment: Promising filly who has won her only two starts with consummate ease. This is a big test going up to Group 3 company but the times she is running indicate she is potentially stakes class. Goes to 1300m for the first time and trialled well during the week.

Beaudesert Saturday December 28

Class 2 Plate 1200m

BOARD MEMBER

Matt Hoysted/TBA

Comment: Shooting for a hat-trick. Ticked an important box last time out when successfully rising from 1000m to 1200m. Looks well placed again.

Sunshine Coast Sunday December 29

Maiden Plate 1800m

DEJA ZOU

Matt Hoysted/TBA

Comment: Just ok on debut over 1200m and then showed marked improvement going to 1400m. Rises sharply in trip to 1800m now and is three weeks between runs but has always given the impression he will stay.

Wyong Tuesday December 31

Class 1 Handicap 1600m

ELLE HUDSON

Matt Hoysted/TBA

Comment: Third-up and ready to fire after two very sound efforts over shorter trips. Will ultimately get over further but won over this track and distance last preparation and looks better than Class 1 grade.
