The consistent SECOND SUN notched his second win when landing some good bets at the Sunshine Coast on Sunday.
Going into the 1800m Class 1 contest, the son of THE AUTUMN SUN had placed in five of his six starts with his only unplaced run coming on debut on a bog track over an unsuitable 1200m.
SECOND SUN ($1.90 into $1.75 fav) settled midfield but took the lead in the straight and powered away to win by 1.8L over FORT DENISON ($41) with another 0.8L to HEREDIATRY ($15) in third.
“He stepped away not too bad today and we found a good position but I would’ve liked him to settle a tad better,” jockey Boris Thornton said.
“When that horse whipped around us three wide down the back straight he got a bit fired up but the further that got the more relaxed he became.
“Once we straightened, he just put them away.”
Thornton fired some ominous words about about the lightly-raced 4yo’s future.
“He pricked his ears once he got passed them so I think he’ll be a better chaser,” he said.
“Once we get up in class, I think you’ll see the very best of him.”
Despite being out of a mare that was a stakes winner over five furlongs, SECOND SUN appears to have all the makings of a horse that will ultimately get out to 2000m and beyond. Trainer Matt Hoysted said he is likely to give the hulking gelding a week’s freshen up before considering another race.
SECOND SUN was a $150,000 yearling purchase from the Arrowfield Stud draft of the 2022 Magic Million January sale and becomes our 57th winner for 2024.
