As the 2023-24 season comes to an end, you will find a ratings review of our star gallopers plus the ones to watch next season in an article on Thursday.

Our times analyst Nic Ashman will provide his analysis on our runners for the season that’s been, with the obvious highlight being our Everest victory courtesy of THINK ABOUT IT. Be sure to check back on our website on August 1 for the full story.

But before that let’s take a look at our runners this week, culminating in what we hope will be strong day at Wyong on Sunday.

Also a special mention to Steve O’Dea who will have his final runners in partnership with Matt Hoysted at Doomben on Wednesday before stepping away from training to pursue a career in the bloodstock side of the industry. Among those starters is the Proven Thoroughbreds-raced SPIN DOCTOR.

Hoysted (pictured) will take over the operation from next season, with his first official runners scheduled for Doomben’s Saturday fixture.

SIRE ON FIRE – SHALAA

With limited action around he managed to sire first and second in last Saturday’s G3 Bletchingly Stakes courtesy of RECOMMENDATION, who is now being targeted towards the G1 Manikato Stakes, and SEMILLION.

BLACK BOOKER – ELLE HUDSON

Was second-up and more than a month between runs when wide no cover at Wyong last week. Will derive plenty of benefit from that and expecting improvement next start.

BET WITH NIC

Our resident times analyst Nic Ashman gave us an Olympic multi into a spring racing futures bet last week.

“Two of three swimming legs have the green tick next to their name with Katie Ledecky to go in the Women’s 1500m final. Then it’s over to VIA SISTINA in the Turnbull Stakes. Let’s go!”

Upcoming Proven Thoroughbreds runners

Doomben Wednesday July 31

3YO Open Handicap 1350m

SPIN DOCTOR

Matt Hoysted/

Comment: Decent run first-up given it was just his second in 9 months. If he can jump well and grab leaders back then he’s a chance to out-slog BATTLEFIELD in the straight

Rosehill Saturday August 3

BM78 Handicap 1400m

LITTLE COINTREAU

Joe Pride/Jay Ford

Comment: Terrific win with 60kg last start when heavily backed. All four runs this prep have been in races of moderate to slow tempo meaning we still have plenty of horse left. Expecting him to be hard to beat again and would love a drying track.

BM72 Handicap 1200m

COSMONOVA

Joe Pride/Reece Jones

Comment: Knuckled down hard clocking the second fastest last 200m of the meeting to win at Canterbury last week. Her final section was 4L faster than average for that grade and her overall time was 2.5L quicker suggesting she will handle tougher opposition.

Midway BM72 Handicap 1400m

LICHESTER

Kerry Parker/Reece Jones

Comment: Much improved effort when held up for a run last start. Her final 400m/200m was good and she’ll be suited here with if the pace is on.

Wyong Sunday August 4

Class 1 Handicap 1100m

ICONIC TREASURE

Joe Pride/TBA

Comment: Progressive type that has trialled nicely ahead of his second prep. Placed all three runs including a win albeit those races didn’t rate highly. Finds a suitable race to kick off in.

Maiden Handicap 1100m

MOONLIGHT GAMBLER

Joe Pride/TBA

Comment: $110,000 son of RUBICK that looked very sharp in a recent trial. Expect him to jump on the bunny and give them plenty to chase.

TRAPELLA

Joe Pride/TBA

Comment: TRAPEZE ARTIST filly on debut. Hasn’t been asked for much in recent trials so will be interesting to see how she performs under race conditions.

Maiden Handicap 1600m

ELLE HUDSON

Joe Pride/TBA

Comment: Caught wide no cover last start when a gap between runs and stuck on well for third recording the best last 600m of the race. Looks ready to peak.
