Talented filly THE BLACK CLOUD made it three wins from four starts with a tenacious win at Randwick last Saturday.
Settling just off the pace, where leader PASSEGIATA went 0.5L faster than benchmark through the first 400m, THE BLACK CLOUD ($4.40) had to produce the fastest last 600m of the meeting to wear down PASSEGIATA ($6) and win by 1.2L with MOGO MAGIC ($6) alongside in third.
“Once we got balanced up she kept coming at them, the light weight helped but it was just good to see her come back as good as she went out,” jockey Jay Ford said before firing an ominous warning to future rivals.
“She got a bit keen, that was the first time she’s had the pressure (of a 1000m race) and she took a sit but she’s game.
“She added a new string to her bow today.”

The daughter of Cox Plate winner SHAMUS AWARD had to do it at both ends according to our times analyst Nic Ashman.
“Only five horses on the entire card went faster than her through the first section of the race yet her split between the 400m and 200m ranked 5th for the day,” he said.
“She was entitled to get tired over the last 200m but fought doggedly to win.
“Her sectionals say she will improve off this.”
Trainer Joe Pride is eyeing off another 1000m BM78 back at Randwick on Saturday week for THE BLACK CLOUD. Her performance there will determine if she’s ready for a tilt at stakes level.
THE BLACK CLOUD was a $100,000 purchase from the Golden Grove draft at the 2022 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale. She has now amassed more than $160,000 in four starts and is our 20th winner for 2024.
