As we usher in a new year, there is a heightened sense of excitement with action on both the racing and sales front.
The 2024 sales season kicks off with the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, where Proven is currently scouring the complex to (hopefully) unearth another THINK ABOUT IT, PRIVATE EYE, etc.
A hefty 1400+ catalogue will keep us busy until January 16 however the racing won’t stop.
Impressive debut winner FORTUNEER heads to Ipswich on Saturday while at the Gold Coast,- the precursor to the lucrative Magic Millions meeting on January 13, TOWN CRIER lines up in the QTIS 3YO Handicap (1200m) following an encouraging second placing at Eagle Farm last month.
A trio of O’Dea-Hoysted runners have been nominated for the Sunshine Coast Sunday card – progressive mare OCEAN ZAR, debutante TERMAGANT and the lightly-raced JET STREAM.

BLACK BOOKER
ACCREDITED could hardly have run better from a wide gate on Boxing Day. Caught four and five wide for most of the 1200m journey, the gelding stuck to his task gamely in the straight to claim fourth, less than 2.5 lengths astern of the winner. Suspect he has bumped into two strong form races since winning first-up at Warwick Farm in November. Stick with him.
Upcoming Proven Thoroughbreds runners
Ipswich Saturday January 6
BM62 Handicap 1200m
FORTUNEER
Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Emily Lang (a)
Comment: Overcame a wide trip on debut and quickened smartly to win a Doomben maiden in convincing fashion. Can go right on with it here.
Gold Coast Saturday January 6
QTIS 3YO Handicap 1200m
TOWN CRIER
Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Cejay Graham (a1.5)
Comment: Looked as though he wasn’t going to figure in the finish last start but he really sprouted wings late to grab second. Back up to 1200m from 1000m suits and is improving with every run this preparation.
Sunshine Coast Sunday January 7
BM62 Handicap 1400m
OCEAN ZAR
Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/TBA
Comment: Indicated promise last preparation with a win and two second placings. Sure to have matured more this time in and should be suited by going to 1400m first-up.
QTIS 3YO Maiden Handicap 1000m
TERMAGANT
Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/TBA
Comment: Well bred filly and has looked good at the trials. If she can bring that to raceday, she should be figuring in the finish.
JET STREAM
Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/TBA
Comment: Very green on debut over the 800m Ipswich course. Was slow out and slow to muster but was doing her best work late to grab fourth. Can only improve up to 1000m.
