As far as debut wins go, 3YO filly FORTUNEER could hardly have done more at Doomben’s twilight meeting on Friday.
Co-trainers Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted rolled the dice in running FORTUNEER from a wide gate, and despite being caught three and four wide, the daughter of RUBICK won the 1110m maiden by a widening 1.5 lengths.
The manner in which she let down at the 200m mark would suggest there is much more to come with FORTUNEER, a $67,500 yearling from Kambula Stud’s draft at last year’s Magic Millions Adelaide Sale.
“A fantastic result today. She let go with a really good turn of foot,” Hoysted said.
“She’s got a great demeanour this filly and that’s going to take her a long way.”
Proven Thoroughbreds has enjoyed a terrific record with progeny of RUBICK. FORTUNEER was our 5th metropolitan winner from 5 starters which includes stakes performer CONTEMPTUOUS.
Prior to FORTUNEER’s excellent debut, stablemate CARTWHEELS (by TRAPEZE ARTIST) – another first starter, finished an encouraging second behind a filly that was having her eighth career start.
Proven’s winners tally for 2023 now stands at 51 with just over three weeks until 2024.
