BETTER GET SET will be out to defend her Just Now Stakes title at Eagle Farm this Saturday.

The Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted-trained mare was a dominant winner of the race 12 months ago when starting a $4.40 chance, and is a similar price in early markets to go back-to-back, following an excellent second placing to COMRADE ROSA last month.

Victory for BETTER GET SET on Saturday would be her seventh in 29 career starts, and elevate her earnings past half a million dollars.

Having been acquired by Proven Thoroughbreds for $85,000 at the 2019 Magic Millions March QTIS Sale, BETTER GET SET is eligible to contest the $1 million Magic Millions Fillies & Mares Race (1300m) on the Gold Coast next month.

This week’s runners also includes debutantes FORTUNEER (O’Dea/Hoysted) and CARTWHEELS (O’Dea/Hoysted). Both are 3YO fillies coming off impressive barrier trial wins.

Meanwhile, last start winner IN FLIGHT heads to Kembla’s Saturday meeting to race Class 1 rivals over 1000m.

BLACK BOOKER

LICHESTER had no luck when posted wide throughout at Hawkesbury. It can be a tricky track to navigate at the best of times but a wide barrier and a dawdling tempo left her exposed second-up but she fought on admirably to hold down third place. Up in distance on a hopefully rain affected track would be ideal for this mare next start.

Upcoming Proven Thoroughbreds runners

Doomben Friday December 8

3YO Maiden Plate 1110m

CARTWHEELS

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Justin Huxtable

Comment: First starter by TRAPEZE ARTIST. Has won two of her three trials to date and drawn the rails here so must be considered a winning chance.

3YO Maiden Plate 1110m

FORTUNEER

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Justin Huxtable

Comment: First starter by RUBICK. Won her latest trial in good style but has drawn awkwardly so will need some luck in running.

Eagle Farm Saturday December 9

Listed Just Now Stakes 1300m

BETTER GET SET

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Ben Thompson

Comment: Looks well placed to go back to back in this race following an encouraging second place when first-up over 1200m. Retains regular rider Ben Thompson and drawn to effect.

BM80 Handicap 1200m

STROLL

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Boris Thornton

Comment: Finished just off the placegetters first-up at Doomben. Much better suited at Eagle Farm and generally improves with a run under her belt.

Kembla Saturday December 9

Class 1 Handicap 1000m

IN FLIGHT

Joe Pride/Jean Van Overmeire

Comment: Coming off an impressive win over 1000m at Gosford last month. Third-up now she is hard fit and won’t be far away from a low draw.
