A quartet of runners for the Proven team this week as the spring carnival starts to heat up.
Joe Pride’s marvel EDUARDO lines up against his old sparring partner NATURE STRIP in the Group 2 Concorde Stakes (1000m) at Randwick while the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) headlines the meeting at Caulfield.
Proven’s contingent of runners begins at Newcastle on Tuesday with debutante HOOD RIVER. The 3YO filly was acquired in NZ and is from the family of Oaks winner BONNEVAL.
MERSEYSIDE is set to resume at Doomben on Wednesday before RUBINOCCHI continues her campaign at Randwick’s feature meeting on Saturday.
Rounding out the week’s starters will be last start winner AFFECTIONATE at the Sunshine Coast on Sunday.
On the trial front, the Proven and Pride team have the unraced pair COMBAT CRUSADER and BOTTLER heading to the Warwick Farm heats on Thursday morning.

BLACK BOOKER
HANG FIVE looks ready to win third-up. Last start at the Sunshine Coast he was forced to go back from a wide barrier and made up many lengths in the straight to finish fourth, running the fastest last 400m of the race. He was a winner third-up last preparation over 1400m so a race over a similar distance next start should be right up his alley.
Upcoming Proven Thoroughbreds runners
Newcastle Tuesday August 29
F&M Maiden Plate 1300m
HOOD RIVER
Joe Pride/Sam Clipperton
Comment: On debut. Stoutly-bred filly likely to find others too sharp first-up so looking for her to be hitting the line late.
Doomben Wednesday August 30
BM70 Handicap 1200m
MERSEYSIDE
Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Cejay Graham (a2)
Comment: Resuming. Will likely have to go back from a wide draw. Look for her late with a view to getting over a bit further deeper into the preparation.
Randwick Saturday September 2
Mares BM78 Handicap 1100m
RUBINOCCHI
Joe Pride/TBA
Comment: Terrific first-up off a long break but has only been ok in two runs since. Three weeks between runs now looks more suitable and any rain around would be a plus.
Sunshine Coast Sunday September 3
BM60 Handicap 1800m
AFFECTIONATE
Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Emily Lang (a3)
Comment: Sustained a long run from the back to win here over a mile last start, suggesting the extra 200m won’t pose any problems. Looks well placed with the 3kg claim.
