The Sydney autumn carnival continues at Rosehill on Saturday with the running of the $1.5 million Group 1 Tancred Stakes (2400m) – a race Proven Thoroughbreds will be hoping to go one better in after STOCKMAN was runner-up last year.

STOCKMAN (pictured) was a brave second to DUAIS in the 2022 edition of the Tancred, finishing in advance of top class gallopers like THINK IT OVER and SPANISH MISSION.

The track was a soft (6) on that occasion and we are hoping for similar conditions again this year with up to 30mm of rain forecast between Thursday and Saturday.

STOCKMAN has been a wonderful horse for our team. A $1.5 million earner from 40 starts, the 6YO gelding was one of only a handful of Australasian-bred horses to run in last year’s Melbourne Cup at Flemington, where he finished an unlucky eighth of 22.

Among our other runners this week will be the consistent MERSEYSIDE at Doomben on Wednesday and the debutante DEEP UNDERCOVER at the Sunshine Coast’s Sunday meeting.

BLACK BOOKER

Hard not to be excited by the prospects of SPIN DOCTOR after his fast-finishing third in the QTIS 2YO Jewel last Saturday at Doomben. He was classy enough to win on debut over 1000m but it would appear this horse’s future will be over distances between 1400m and 1600m. He’s gone for a spell now and we are very much looking forward to seeing what he can produce as a 3YO.

Upcoming Proven Thoroughbreds runners

Doomben Wednesday Mar 22

Class 5 Handicap 1350m:

MERSEYSIDE

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Ben Thompson

Comment: Racing in fine form, having finished in the top three at each of her five runs this preparation. Finds a suitable race here with a top jockey aboard.

Ipswich Thursday Mar 23

CG&E Maiden Plate 1350m:

CHICANE

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Boris Thornton

Comment: Improved sharply at his second career start to finish a clear second here. Though 3.5 lengths astern of the winner, he comfortably beat the rest of the field and looks well placed to break his maiden.

Rosehill Saturday Mar 25

Group 1 Tancred Stakes 2400m

STOCKMAN

Joe Pride/Sam Clipperton

Comment: Ridden on speed last start in the Sky High Stakes and battled on resolutely to finish less than two lengths from the winner. Much better suited up to 2400m and if the forecast rain arrives, he will be prominent. Ran second in this race last year.

Sunshine Coast Sunday Mar 26

QTIS 3YO Fillies Maiden Handicap 1000m:

DEEP UNDERCOVER

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/TBA

Comment: First starter. Has taken some time to mature but always revealed natural ability at the trials. Finished third in her latest trial and can hopefully have a positive experience at her race debut.
