Another bumper week of racing will coincide with the Adelaide Magic Millions Yearling Sale which is where the journey with PRIVATE EYE began.
A bid of $62,500 at the 2019 Adelaide MM Sale was enough to secure a then 1YO PRIVATE EYE from the draft of Ambergate Farm (acting as agent for Goodwood Farm).
The rest, as they say, is history.
PRIVATE EYE opened his autumn campaign with a gallant fourth under topweight in last Saturday’s Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington.
But before we had time to fully dissect the run, ageless warrior SCALLOPINI kept his perfect Flemington record intact with his third stakes win over the 1400m course.
Travelling in his now customary on speed position, the 8YO SCALLOPINI defied barrier 14 and a 60kg impost to win the $200,000 Group 3 Shaftesbury Avenue Handicap and confirm his status as one of the most durable sons of SNITZEL ever seen.
Following the Adelaide auction, Proven Thoroughbreds will turn its attention towards the lucrative Jewel meeting at Doomben (relocated from the under-construction Gold Coast track) where as many as five horses in the black and lime green colours could face the starter.

BLACK BOOKER
CHICANE improved sharply at his second career start to finish a clear second at Ipswich last week. Though 3.5 lengths astern of the winner, he defeated the third placed runner by 2.5 lengths, suggesting it will be a decent maiden from a form perspective. If he can continue on his current trajectory, he won’t be a maiden for much longer.
Upcoming Proven Thoroughbreds runners
Warwick Tuesday Mar 14
Maiden Handicap 1200m:
MINGLE
Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Emily Lang (1.5kg)
Comment: Has failed to live up to expectations so far in her three starts to date. Blinkers go on and is in beautifully at the weights so will be hard to find an excuse for her in this company.
Eagle Farm Wednesday Mar 15
Maiden Plate 1400m:
DEELBREAKA
Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Boris Thornton
Comment: Patiently handled son of DUNDEEL having his first start. Won a recent 1050m trial by 3 lengths. Has had a good grounding for this first-up assignment but might be looking for a touch further.
NAVAL TRADER
Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Jaden Lloyd
Comment: He was a tragedy beaten last start when hopelessly blocked for a run in the home straight. Can bounce back hard.
3YO Maiden Plate 1200m:
WITH INTENT
Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Ben Thompson
Comment: Worked home solidly into 4th on debut at the Sunshine Coast over 1000m. Can only improve up to 1200m and has a favourable draw.
BM70 Handicap 1500m:
HANG FIVE
Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Brodie Loy
Comment: Rediscovered winning form over 1400m here last month when ridden on speed. The extra 100m shouldn’t pose any problems and he maps to get a good run again.
Gosford Thursday Mar 16
Maiden Handicap 1350m:
HEDGE FUND
Kerry Parker/Brenton Avdulla
Comment: Ridden upside down last start and was a spent force by the 200m. Total forgive run second-up off a long spell. Going off his fresh run, he is right in this.
Ipswich Friday Mar 17
Maiden Handicap 1350m:
BETTER YET
Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Ben Thompson
Comment: Runner-up in two starts back this preparation. Has only been beaten 0.2 lengths on both occasions so is certainly knocking on the door. Likely small field suits.
Doomben Saturday Mar 18
QTIS 2YO Jewel 1200m:
SPIN DOCTOR
Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Brodie Loy
Comment: Impressive debut winner of the Prelude over 1000m at Eagle Farm. 1200m at Doomben is a different beast but could have a class edge over most of the opposition.
SHOT OF WHISKEY
Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Boris Thornton
Comment: Won well at his first start but prizemoney from that race might not be sufficient to gain a start. If by some chance he makes the field, he will be one of the main contenders.
Military Rose Plate 1110m:
FETCH
Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Kyle Wilson-Taylor
Comment: Strong winner first-up here in Class 6 company. Goes up in grade against some accomplished fillies and mares, none more so than the 102-rated ISOTOPE, but has a great record at Doomben and is coming off a career peak.
Class 6 Handicap 1600m:
SECRET TALES
Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted/Taylor Marshall
Comment: Burst through in a blanket finish to get the money second-up on an unsuitably firm track. Proven at the mile and plunges in weight.
