The old saying, “you get what you pay for”, doesn’t always apply to the acquisition of racehorses. So when STROLL, a $450k yearling, was an emphatic winner of the Listed Bill Carter Stakes at just her fourth start, the beaming connections reflected a combination of unbridled joy and relief!
Always held in high regard by trainers Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted, the SNITZEL filly was her sire’s 122nd individual Stakes winner in a remarkable career at stud.
The 2YO had shown potential with a Sunshine Coast victory on debut but appreciated getting on top of the firm Eagle Farm surface Saturday after having to deal with the Gold Coast slop at her two prior runs.
Beginning well from the barriers, top class jockey Willie Pike positioned the filly in a perfect trailing spot midfield and her dour finish immediately prompted the rider to suggest she was “ready for 1400m now”. To that end, the 1400m Tattersall’s Life Member Stakes on June 25 at the same venue, looks ideal.
Bred at Gerry Harvey’s Baramul Stud, STROLL is just the first foal of STREET CRY mare WALK THE STREETS. A truly eye-catching filly at last year’s Magic Millions January Sale, she was rated the “best we’d seen” by Steve, who was joined in ownership by Gerry and a number of loyal Proven clients.
The owners’ considerable investment has already paid dividends because well bred stakes winning 2YO fillies have huge residual value.
Whilst May was a forgettable month due in no small part to relentless rainfall, washouts, postponements and training interruptions, June has kicked off in style as the Bill Carter Stakes was Proven’s 53rd winner and 7th stakes winner of the season.
STROLL 2.0?
Earlier this year we followed almost the exact same formula we adopted with STROLL when acquiring the SNITZEL x PALAZZO CRISTALLO filly:
- Purchased at the Magic Millions January Sale
- Bred and sold by Baramul Stud
- By SNITZEL
- Out of a lightly-raced chestnut mare born in 2013
- Stakes winning & stakes producing second dam
- Share retained by Baramul Stud
- Share purchased by co-trainer Steve O’Dea
- Strong scopey type with great length of rein and undercarriage
As well as STROLL winning a stakes race, we were also buoyed to see the SNITZEL x PALAZZO CRISTALLO’s full brother PYROMANIA (which we were underbidders on last year) win his first public trial at Warwick Farm last month. Watch the replay of the trial win HERE.
