After taking 15 starts to break his maiden, the Steve O’Dea-trained Really Reilly took the step from maiden company to a class one in his stride at the Sunshine Coast on Sunday.

Following his victory at Doomben less than three weeks ago, Really Reilly was still travelling last at the 400 metre mark before unleashing a powerful sprint to claim a narrow victory under 59kg, defying the track bias in the process.

It was a composed ride by Paul Hammersley, who was faced with overcoming the outside barrier in 10.

Full credit must go to Steve who has worked out the son of O’Reilly in keeping him fresh around 1400 metres.

The four-year-old’s record now reads two wins and seven minor placings from 16 starts.
