Mixed News

We thought he raced like a tired horse yesterday and our fears that he has had enough this prep were probably endorsed.

I say probably because we really don’t know whether it was the 2100m, the soft going or the fact he’s over the top. Needs a spell though, which therefore begs the question as to whether the horse has ongoing viability.

He’s had 11 sts, been in the placings half a dozen times, run 4th or 5th on four occasions and only run one shocker. This prep has also been compromised big time by wet tracks as we’ve grappled with what distance he’s best suited to. Yet, he’s winning record is slipping away as he’s only had the one triumph and earned just 16k.

To sell now, he’s probably worth about 15-20k and to fund another 6mths will cost about 15-20k. That means we’d have to be confident he could return 35-40k in prizemoney next prep. In the stable we are often confronted with this predicament as so many horses win a race or two before hitting their limits in city racing. What heartens me about this bloke is that he’s very consistent and genuine. The $64 question is to what level he can sustain that consistency.

Given his only runs on good tracks in this 9 run prep yielded a win and a 3rd, the fact that he’s sound with no vices and has a temperament conducive to training on, would suggest he’s worth persevering with. However, the choice is yours so please let me know.

Cheers,
Jamie Walter
